Overcoming Sister Wounds: The Power of Women Supporting Women

Natalie and Yvonne

I wholeheartedly believe we need to get better at accepting that women need to be around other women.

And it’s a tricky one because there are so many sister wounds making us doubt the safety and value of this.

When I say sister, it’s a collective term for wounds created as a result of painful experiences with other women; mothers, sisters, school mates, teachers, colleagues…

Many of us are carrying around a deep mistrust of other women and it’s time we healed this as it’s a necessary part of our own healing.

We are all one. If we don’t trust ‘her’ we don’t trust us.

Looking back over my life it’s obvious now, though I had zero awareness then, that I was carrying a sister wound –

Friendships with men felt safer because I knew where I stood with them, cliques of women made my nervous system recoil, in group settings I was an observer, I found it hard to open up and share vulnerably, and I often experienced betrayal at the hands of women.

And… as I continue on this journey I have enjoyed great healing by letting my walls down and women in.

There’s something magical that happens when you put yourself in the company of like-minded women, women who want to heal, evolve and enjoy life more.

Women who are learning to get comfortable with the discomfort of opening up, sharing the bits they usually hide and experiencing zero judgement just love and compassion.

Women who don’t try to fix you or see you as broken, simply holding space for each other exactly as they are in that moment.

I can’t express how grateful I am to the women who have held me and witnessed me in both my mess and greatness, and for the women who have allowed me to do this for them.
