How often you take a lunch break?

Natalie Shaul019

I never had time for a lunch hour, there always too much to do so I’d eat at my desk as I worked.

More time at my desk meant more productivity right?

I was desperate to prove myself and not to be thought of as lazy.

I had one boss who’d ask if I ‘wanted’ to do a working lunch, feeding into the idea that those that lunched were less committed!

I’d start early, work through lunch and stay late too, all without a proper lunch break.

Does this sound familiar?

Of course, this pattern was counterproductive…

Over time I felt overwhelmed and my concentration was affected.

My health declined and I was less effective.

This in turn increased my stress levels.

Taking a lunch break should be a daily occurrence.

A necessity, not a luxury.

Why?

Firstly, we need food to fuel our brain and body.

Stepping away from our desk actually increases productivity through increasing focus and energy.

Taking a break is good for our well being and helps to alleviate stress.

Scientifically speaking, our brain can work for 90 minutes and needs 20 minutes to recharge.

If you want to improve your productivity, make taking a lunch break a priority.

Here’s a few ideas on how you can spend your lunch break –

  • Eat healthy, energy boosting foods – avoid sugars and consume plenty of fresh whole foods
  • Leave the building –  go for a walk and get some fresh air
  • Socialise – Meet a colleague and have a non-work related chat
  • Get some peace and quiet – go to a quiet area when you can switch off. Meditation, music and reading are all good ways to relax

To boost your productivity, make taking a lunch break part of your day.
