Are you nearing your threshold?

15

I stood in my kitchen watching two men trying to break into my house!

It was 7.15am so when I’d heard a noise downstairs I never expected it to be burglars.

I shouted what are you doing?

One of them stared me straight in the eye, beckoned with his finger and said come here…

I’m not going to lie I was scared. Petrified!

Burglars would run off wouldn’t they? What did he want from me?

I didn’t hang around to find out. I locked myself in the bathroom and called the police. They were of course gone by the time the police arrived.

But there was enough evidence to identify them and that’s when I learned they lived 2 roads away from me!

I was terrified to be in my house and terrified to leave my house in case they came after me. I’d reported them after all…

I got an alarm installed and carried the panic button with me constantly. I wouldn’t leave a room without it.

I didn’t start work until 9am and it was just a 15 minute drive but I started leaving for work at 6.30am with my then boyfriend so I wasn’t home alone.

I was constantly on edge and my nerves were frayed!

Looking back now I see that experience was a huge source of stress. It pushed me a big step closer to my eventual burnout.

Stress comes at us from all angles and it’s cumulative.

From small daily stresses like running out of milk, traffic on the way to work, not liking the way we look, not feeling good enough or an argument…

To the big ones like a burglary, a relationship break up, redundancy or the loss of a loved one.

Over time they all add up and they push us closer and closer to our threshold. There’s only so much we can take?

There was nothing I could have done to prevent that burglary, some things are beyond our control.

But I could have reduced some of the daily stresses and this would have kept me away from my burnout threshold.
