Writing check lists like this one for when my daughter goes to child care.
I could try to memorise the list!
However that would take up unnecessary and valuable brain space that could be better put to use elsewhere.
The list allows me to easily gather everything I need without using up precious brain power
It also allows me to avoid the inconvenience, frustration and the embarrassment of forgetting anything needed.
It allows me to feel like I’m winning
Self care is using quick and simple hacks to avoid overwhelm and mental fatigue.
(There’s another piece to this in that we need to feel worthy of success, that’s for another day)
